Day 1: Thursday, October 16
We head to West Virginia, setting out for the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad where we pick up our well-informed local guide and enjoy a premium lunch excursion. We’ll experience a beautiful scenic train ride with a history that dates back to 1875. We will travel along the gorgeous Valley of the Trough and encounter immersive river scenery found along the South Branch of the Potomac River. Lunch will be served on our 3-hour train ride. Following the train ride, we will check into our hotel, Wingate by Wyndham – Elkins, and dinner will be on our own this evening in Elkins.
Day 2: Friday, October 17
We’ll have a relaxing breakfast at the hotel and then make our way to the Cass Depot. This is where we catch today’s train excursion aboard the Greenbrier Express. The 2-hour ride upriver from Cass passes through a secluded wilderness portion of the 950,000-acre Monongahela National Forest, featuring beautiful scenes of forested mountains at each turn of the river. Sightings of deer, river otters, and black bears, along with a wide variety of eagles, hawks, ospreys, and other species of aquatic birds are common. After the train ride, our lunch today will be at Simply Sweet Café. After lunch we will have some shopping time at the Durbin Rail & Trail Store, before heading back to the hotel to freshen up before dinner. This evening, we are in for a delightful treat at the Gandy Dancer Dinner Theatre. We will experience the finest in live entertainment and excellent regional American cuisine.
Day 3: Saturday, October 18
After breakfast and check-out at the hotel, we will set out for the West Virginia Railroad Museum before boarding the Tygart Flyer Excursion. This 4-hour and 48-mile wilderness excursion features mountain grades, an “S” curve tunnel, a high bridge, and miles of unspoiled mountain views. The vintage diesel-powered locomotive climbs along the cascading Shavers Fork of the Cheat River to the High Falls of Cheat. We’ll enjoy the breathtaking views aboard the comfortable climate-controlled passenger coach where we will have a cold-cut buffet for our lunch while traveling. Following, we’ll depart for home, with an on your own dinner stop, reminiscing about the beautiful memories of awe-inspiring fall foliage, mountain views, and the timeless charm of trains of yesteryear.
